The dangers of complacency
Well I guess I was taken over by complacency.... I stopped following the plan, slowed to a stand still on exercise. And Guess what! I put on weight! I put on 13llbs... I now know more than ever that to stay maintaining this is a life long plan of the right food choices and regular exercise. It only took around 6 weeks to put on the weight and so far having been back on track and back at the gym I have only lost 5 of those! I will lose the other 8llbs but it is so much harder than it ever was. I have had to stop and take a look back at all I achieved and how I did it to remind myself what I came from and what I became. I will never allow myself to go back there. I will never ever think again, oh its only a llb. Those 'only a llbs' add up! I have made a slide show of my journey so that every time I feel like making the wrong food choice or not going to the gym I can look at this and inspire myself. I am the only one who can do this for me! I am in control! I will do this!

Hello I have been reading your blog and found it very informative can you tell me what helped you make the decision on the type of procedure you had??
ReplyDeletePS - Well done and its refreshing to read your honesty about your journey
Thank you. I originally enquired about the gastric band which had been recommended by my GP. After speaking with the surgeon, he explained the 3 options I had, the band, the sleeve and the bypass. He felt I did not require the bypass but asked me to do as much research as I could on the band and the sleeve before making my decision. I did feel however that he was guideing me towards the sleeve. Whilst in the waiting room I was sat next to a lady who had the band and it had eaten into her stomach so she was having it removed and having the sleeve done. I did what he said, I scoured the internet for information on both procedures. I joined groups on facebook for people who have had or are having surgery and asked for their opinions. I spoke to quite a few people who had to do the same as the lady in the waiting room. So the band is a foriegn object in your body, it can cause issues and you have to get regular hospital visits for refills etc, plus side its cheaper, its not lifetime as it can be removed. The sleeve is more expensive its for life, there is no going back, there is no changing your mind! plus side, no follow up other than 6 month and 1 year check ups. Much less danger of complications and there is no going back!!! I just felt that I needed this change for ever with as few a complicaiton as possible so chose the sleeve. Everyone is different and I suppose it also depends on how much weight you have to lose in the first place. Hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jacky that is most helpful, my surgeon did recommend the bypass but I really don't like the idea of it. So I have chosen the sleeve and it will be happening in 8 weeks. I am excited and terrified all at the same time but I to want my life back :)
DeleteHi Jacky thank you for your reply I just wondered now you have lost so much weight have you found excess skin a problem or is it not as bad as you thought??? I have my procedure on the 3 July and I start a weight loss program tomorrow as I have been asked to try and loose 5kg before the procedure. I am anxious about that as I have problems loosing weight in general hence the procedure and then 2 weeks prior to op I have got to go on a special diet for the liver shrinkage. If you have any tips I would be most grateful.
DeleteI did not have to lose weight to get the surgery as I went private but I did have to do the pre op liver reducing diet in which I lost 13llbs in the two weeks I was on it. The first 3 days are really hard, its like being in withdrawl! and really, you are in withdrawl from sugar and carbs. I did get quite bad headache with it. I would recommend lots and lots of water. With the diet I was given I could actually eat quite large portions but there were very few calories in what I was eating. Again it was the carb withdrawl that was really the problem. But after the first 3 days it was so much easier. All I had to think was its only 2 weeks, its only two weeks! Its not like when you are on a normal diet and you can see no end so it seems to be so much easier to get through. I would not cheat, as I have heard people being turned back on surgery due to the liver being to big and in the way.
DeleteI do have an extra skin problem but with the right clothing I can hide it quite well however I will never be wearing a bikini!!! I found that plenty of exercise has helped. I have met quite a few people who have not done much exercise but have relied soley on the diet and they have more extra skin than I do. Every one is different though, it does depend quite a lot on your age, the elasticity in your skin, the speed at which you lose etc. I did not even think about it before, my surgeon did tell me to be prepared to hate my body just as much as I did back then and I never really understood until I got there. He was right, I was actually more comfortable in beach wear and short or sleevless tops with the weight on! Hard to believe until you get there. However I will not have skin removal surgery as I class this as cosmetic, I find surgery to scarey to go through for cosmetic reasons. I still would not turn back the clock though. This was the best decision I have ever made and I wish I had made it sooner. I have my health now and thats what matters to me. Good luck with yur op, its not long now :-) Which one did you opt for in the end?
Hi Jacky thank you for your reply your honesty is helping me a lot and it is definately keeping me on track. I have opted for the sleeve as I am really uncomfortable with the bypass. I am happy with my decision and now only 3 weeks to go I am still excited and scared all at the same time but I am so looking forward to being healthy.
DeleteThis is the most horrible part in gastric sleeve surgery and it is really great.
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your photos, they are really inspiring. I am 2 weeks out following the sleeve gastrectomy and looking forward to greater health and energy.
Good Luck on your amazing journey to a healthy happy life x
DeleteHello Jacky I am 8 weeks away from my procedure and I am very nervous but also looking forward to the rest of my life. If you have any useful tips for me, please please let me know.
ReplyDeleteHi jacky!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog! Im almost 3 weeks post op and I've hit a road block! I've been stuck at the same weight and even gained 3 pounds this week! I'm following the nutrition plan and im freaking out bc the scale isnt moving DOWN it's moving UP!
Hi Abby, dont you worry, if you are following the plan it will go. Your body is having a bit of a shock right now and there will be many ups and downs and stalls. Any normal person will fluctuate during the month anyway. It will happen, just stick with it. x
DeleteHello I have enjoyed reading your blog. My surgey is scheduled for this Monday on the 22nd. I'm getting excited and you blog is very encouraging. how soon after surgery do you see results. What was your exercise routine after surgery? How many days a week? Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeletethank you JuJu and good luck with your surgery, you must be so excited.
DeleteI started with just a little walk every day and gradually built up the miles to 3 then 4 etc. After a couple of months I started gradually on the core exercises, starting out with Aqua fit. Then I started Zumba.
Now I try to get in an absolute minimum of 3 x 30 mins per week. this week I have done 5 hours of walking, an hour of swimming, 40 mins bike ride and 2 mins of skipping (just started skipping.. its hard lol but burns upto 10 cals per minute) I alternate what my exercise is based on the how I feel, I get bored quite easily, I am a member at a gym that has everything, so I can alternate between classes swimming and the gym.
